Bob was a gardener(园丁) and he had no work for a few months. One day
he went out to look for a job. While he was walking in the street, he saw
a poster (海报) at the gate of a big restaurant. It said the restaurant
needed to hire(雇佣) a man who could grow flowers and trees well. Bob
was so pleased that he went straight to answer it. There Bob was told to
go back and get his old working clothes to the office. And Bob did.
The boss looked over his working clothes carefully and then decided to
let Bob have the job. Bob asked the boss why his working clothes were so
important. The boss answered with a smile," Oh,young man, your working
clothes are all with patches(补丁) on the knees. You know, I have
dismissed (解雇) two men recently. Their working clothes have patches in
the buttock (臀部) 。 They were too lazy.''

30. Doing the same for him
Long long ago, a poor farmer took a bag of rice to the market. He didn't know what to do when the bag fell off the horse. It was too heavy for him to lift and his only hope was that someone would come and help him. It wasn't long before a man riding a horse came up to him. But soon the farmer became worried, for it was an old man, the farmer couldn't hope that he would lend him a hand. However, as soon as the old man came up, he got off his horse and said: " I see, you've had a bad luck, friend. How good it is that I'm here just at the right time.'' Then he took one end of the bag, the farmer took the other. So they lifted it onto the horseback. " Sir,'' asked the farmer. " How can I pay you ?'' " Easy enough,'' the old man said. " Whenever you see anyone else in trouble, do the same for him.''

34.Thanking God for saving him
Mr Day woke up in the middle of the night and saw something white in his garden. It seemed to be moving towards the house. " That is a thief ! ” he thought, and he took his gun and shot at him. Then he went back to bed, because he was too frightened to go out of the house in the dark. The next morning Mr Day went out and saw one of his white shirts hanging on the clothes-line in the garden. His wife had washed it the day before and hung it out to dry. Now it had a bullet-hole right through the middle of it. " My God, ” said Mr Day, " I was lucky last night. If I had been wearing that shirt, the bullet would have killed me !” And called his neighbours together and asked them to thank God gor saving him. |

Once a great boxer, Tom Brown, went to a restaurant for dinner.
He put his bag near the door, but he was afraid that someone would
take it. So he got out a pen and a piece of paper and wrote on it.
" The great boxer, Tom Brown's bag. He'll come back in a few minutes."
He put the paper on his bag and went to have his dinner. When he came
back, his bag wasn't there. But he found a piece of paper on the ground.
It said," A great runner took away your bag, and he will not come back."

2. Advice
Bill was sitting with some of his old friends, they were drinking
coffee and talking about the worth (价值)of things in the world. After
some winutes, one of Bill's friends said to him," Well, Bill, you are a
bright man, but you have said nothing on this matter yet. What is the
most useful thing in the world? ''
Bill answered immediately (立即),“ I think advice is the most useful
thing in the world.''
His friends thought about it for a few moments, and then one of them
asked him," And what is the most useless(无用的) thing in the world?''
Again Bill answered at once, " I think it is advice, too.''
" Are you all right? A moment ago you said that advice is the most
useful thing in the world! How can it be both?''
" Well,'' answered Bill, " if you think about the matter carefully,
you will see that I am quite right. When you give somebody good advice,
he takes it, advice is the most useful thing in the world. But when you
give a person advice and he does not take it, it is the most useless
thing in the world.''

have some trouble getting around. Here is a true story.
Once a Frenchman was travelling in New York City. As he didn't know
any English, he was afraid he would get lost. On the first day after he
left his hotel, he stopped at the first corner and carefully copied down
the name of the street. Then he went to see the city. At last he couldn't
find the way to his hotel. He had to ask for help in a police station. He
told the interpreter(译员) that he didn't know the name of the hotel, but
he knew the name of the street. Then he showed her what he copied down.
To her surprise, the words he had copied down were: "One-way Street"
(单行道).

Once the king of England asked him to pain some pictures on the
walls of the king's palace.
The king showed the palace to the painter and said," You must paint
your pictures round the walls of this place near the ceiling.''
James began to paint. He worked with a man who helped him. A platform
had been raised.
At last the pictures were ready.
James looked at the pictures and was happy with the pictures. He took
one step back and looked again. The pictures looked even more beautiful
when he stood father away. He took another step, then another. Now he was
at the very edge of the platform.
The worker who helped him saw that the painter's life hung by a hair.
" What shall I do? '' he thought. " If I cry out, he will certainly
fall and kill himself. ''
The worker made a quick decision. He took a pail of paint and ran to
the wall, throwing the paint at the finished picture.
" What are you doing? You fool! '' cried the painter, running back to
his picture.
The painter's life was saved, though one of his pictures was
destroyed.

Tony hadn't had a shot all day because the wild ducks didn't come near

Tony drove up to a small restaurant. He parked the car outside, leaving

When he was finishing eating, a farmer burst into the restaurant. He
looked angry. " Who owns that dog ?'' he asked.
" I do,'' said Tony.
He followed the farmer outside. The farmer pointed to the dog by the
car. Then he pointed at a pond across the road. " My ducks !'' he yelled.
" Your dog took my ducks !'' There were eight of them.
Tony at once guessed what had happened. His dog had dropped them into

" I'm awfully sorry ! I'll take the ducks back,'' said Tony.
Tony gave up getting any ducks, but his dog didn't.

题目是这样子的:
____ is better than the god.

Before I knew the answer, I thought it was " it ''. But I was wrong.

Did you get the right key ?
When we don't understand each other's language, we can talk with the
help of signs.
A Frenchman was once travelling in England. He could not speak English
at all. One day he went into a restaurant and sat down at a table. When
the waiter came, he opened his mouth, put his fingers in it and took out
again. He wanted to say," Bring me something to eat.''
The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. The man moved his head from
side to side. The waiter understood him and took the tea away. In a
moment he came with a cup of coffee. But the man again refused it. He
shook his head whenever the waiter brought him something to drink, for
drinks are not food.
When the man was going away, another man came in. This man saw the
waiter, and he put his hand on his stomach. That was enough. In a few
minutes there was a large plate of meat and vegetables on the table in
front of him.
So you see, we can understand the language of signs as well as we can
understand the language of words.
